Be Still, My Soul
In You I rest, in You I find my hope
In You I trust, You never let me go
I place my life within Your hands alone
Be still, my soul.
As the song reminds us, there’s a peace that only comes when we let go and trust in God. But let’s be real—stillness doesn’t come naturally for most of us, does it? Especially not in December. The holiday season feels more like a sprint than a stroll, with endless checklists, Amazon orders, and family gatherings.
Yet, right here, in the middle of all the chaos, God invites us into something radically countercultural: stillness.
What Does It Mean to Be Still?
Being still isn’t just about sitting in silence or escaping to a cabin in the woods (although, if you’ve got one, call me). It’s about the inward posture of your heart. Stillness is about anchoring yourself in the unshakable truths of Scripture, even when life feels like it’s spinning out of control.
Stillness looks like:
- Contentment: Trusting that God has you right where you need to be, even when you wish your circumstances looked different.
- Surrender: Holding your hands open before the Creator, whether He’s giving or taking away, knowing He’s good either way.
- Trust: Letting God lead in the big decisions—career moves, relationships, or the way-too-expensive holiday travel plans.
Stillness is saying, “God, I’m not in control, and I don’t have to be. Only You bring purpose, only You are worthy of my worship, and only You are the one who can steady my soul.”
The Greatest Gift
We’re less than two days away from Christmas, and for many, this season brings a deep ache. People are searching—sometimes desperately—for comfort, peace, and fulfillment. The world offers plenty of counterfeits, but they’ll all come up empty.
Here’s where we, as Christians, have the privilege of stepping in. We get to share the Good News—that the Prince of Peace came to rescue us. Jesus, the Son of God, humbled Himself to be born in a manger, lived a sinless life, died on a cross for our sins, and rose again, defeating death.
This season isn’t just about receiving; it’s about sharing. God’s work in your life—the inward transformation He’s done—should overflow into outward expression. The people around you are watching, searching for hope, whether they admit it or not.
Living Out Stillness
Stillness doesn’t mean you stop moving or doing; it means you move from a place of confidence and rest in Christ. It’s being so filled with His peace that it spills out in how you speak, act, and love others.
So this season, take the time to:
- Be still before God. Rest in His Word, reflect on His goodness, and let Him reset your priorities.
- Share the Gospel boldly. The hope you carry isn’t just for you—it’s meant to be shared.
- Worship deeply. Let your inward posture of stillness before God lead to an outward expression of praise.
Soli Deo Gloria
Let’s not let this Christmas season be just another blur of busyness and to-do lists. Instead, let it be a time where we remind ourselves and others of the unchanging truth: God is with us. Emmanuel.
When your heart is anchored in Him, your soul can be still—even in the busiest, most uncertain seasons.
Be still, my soul, and let’s point the world to the mighty name of King Jesus.
